June 11, 2013. Day 12

I just realized that I'm almost done with this internship! Not cool!!

Today I did a lot of the cleaning and not as much of the with the kids stuff. Every day someone does that but this was the first time it was on me to do it.

Senior awards dinner tonight! Super nervous about that. I'm not sure why though.

See ya maƱana!

June 10, 2013. Day 12

Today it's raining so work was miserable. The kids couldn't go outside so they were hyper bunches of crazy and didn't nap well.

My name is on the teacher thing! That is good.

June 5,2013. Day 11

What a day! Another Crazy busy one!

Today I worked in the infant room. It was a lot harder than all of the other rooms because the babies don't all take a nap at the same time. In my usual class there's two hours of "free time" During naps that we use to clean And make the room a safe environment. In the baby room however it is different. Each infant sleeps for a different amount of time, so there's always someone awake. I Did not like that I couldn't put Joey to sleep today because he is my favorite kid, but he is in the older class.

Tomorrow is prom! Yay! I don't have senior service at all tomorrow because of how my hours work, but ill see you Friday!

Babysitting now so see ya tomorrow!

June 3, 2013. Day 9

Today was another crazy busy day!! Metro theater awards ceremony! We didn't win but it was an honor to be nominated!!!

On my Senior Service today I learned that, in order to be respected, occasionally we need to be down right mean. Today I worked for a short blip of time in the preschool downstairs and the children are outright nasty. I was covering while the teacher was on lunch and I was by myself, so I had no teacher validating my authority to the kids. They were HORRIBLE! It was nap time and almost none of them fell asleep when they were supposed to. I realized about 10 minutes in that if you threaten to write their name on the board, they will do whatever it is you are attempting to convince them to do quickly and quietly. They had such disrespect for me that it took several names on the board for them to realize that I meant business, but I believe that I finally earned their respect and that will hopefully help me tomorrow.

May 31, 2013. Day 8

Today was very very busy. I went from ecd to my internship to the DVD viewing of the musical to babysitting.

Story of the day from work:

Today, we turned our class of 13 toddlers into tribal people. We did so using sunscreen because it was 90 degrees!! During lunch and snack the kids all eat outside and they needed sunscreen! One little girl, Vanessa, seriously looked like she was in a tribe with the white streaks covering her arms and heads.

See you Monday!

May 30, 2013. Day 7

Today was literally the busiest day ever. Went from ecd to my internship and then back to the high school for senior citizen prom.

I've decided from now on my blog is going to be stories from work instead of an outline of what I do soooo:

Today at my internship a one and a half year old named Caitlyn decided that she did not need to have clothes on while she played outside so she proceeded to go behind a tree, strip down to the diaper, and run Ike a frantic woman. It took about two minutes as three teachers to finally tackle her down and get some clothes on.

It was SO hot at work today outside, all of the kids were going crazy. They were crying left and right and nobody wanted to eat their lunch. Hopefully tomorrow is better!

Singin off for now,
Angie.

May 29, 2013. Day 6

I don't really have much to say about today.

Everything was pretty much the same as last time. I guess that is good, that I have a routine there, but it makes these blogs pretty boring!

I guess I'll just share stories of the kids then?

There is a new kid named Joey. Today was his third day of class and I don't know if it is because I look like his mom a little bit or what but he is attached to me like a baby kangaroo. I think it's really sweet but hen the other kids see him doing it they want to too and it becomes tackle Ms. Angie time. Not much fun.

I guess that is all for today. See ya tomorrow!!

May 23, 2013. Day 4

I saved this as a draft yesterday instead of publish. Oops!!

Today was so much fun!

I'm really starting to get a feel for the place. I work solidly with Jill, the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 teacher and it is a more stable class. The kids are crazy!! None of them stop moving EVER. there is a new kid, Joey, who I have taken quite a liking to. He would only fall asleep for me, which always makes me feel really special. Fence is s being worked on, so it was an inside day. Plus it started RAINING LIKE CRAZYYY!! So I'm glad we were inside.

I got do design my own projects for today. I'm not there during project time, but nap time is when we create them and I got to lay it out! The letter of the week is "x" so I created a butterfly out of the letter!

Looking forward to tomorrow,

Angie

Wednesday May 22, Day 3

Such a busy day!!

Today is my birthday!! Yay!! The big 18!

In ECD today it was field day which was very amusing/slightly tiring.

At my internship they are putting up a new fence which will take 2-3 days. That means that until they are done and there is no chance of the kids escaping, we can't play outside.

I've finally started to settle in at work. I work with the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 year old class officially now, and I finally know all of their names. There are 16 of them. Today, Kate, a 2- year old, came up to me and whispered "happy birthday miss Angie. I hope you get cake" which may have been the cutest thing ever!!

Time flew by today and before I knew it, it was time for me to go home!

See you tomorrow!

Tuesday, May 21. Day 2

Today was the second day of my Senior Service. I arrived a minute late today because they were doing random seatbelt checks on Kinderkamack road and traffic was at a stand still.

When I arrived today the owner, Laura, was there. She reintroduced herself and I got right to work, first helping her install air conditioning units and then watching all of the kids play outside. Today I was taught the quadrant system, where each girl watches a different part of the playground. This was much easier then yesterday's running crazy after kids!

Today I learned some new rules. I was put on diaper/sunscreen duty so I learned all of the ins and outs of that, and I learned the most torturous rule of all: YOU CAN NEVER SIT DOWN! As it was explained to me, if you are sitting down taking care of one or two children and another one is doing something dangerous across the room, your reaction time is slowed by the fact that you are sitting. I guess this rule makes sense and is a smart one to have, but it is very tiring. If we have to get to a child's level to talk to them, we have to squat, so I guess I'll be developing some amazing muscles during my time here!

Today was a good day but I am crazy tres. Tomorrow is ECD field day AND is supposed to be crazy hot, so well see how it goes!

Signing off,

Angie

Monday, May 20

First day of my internship!! Yay!!
I am interning at Cradles to Crayons daycare center in Emerson, New Jersey. I mainly work as an aid in the 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 class but today I also worked in the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 room and also in the infant room.

Today I arrived at the daycare at 11am ready to go. When I arrived, it was time for the kids to go outside for freeplay and lunch from 11-1. During this time, I supervised the play area, broke up tiny arguements between the three year olds, and played with the kids as a whole. At about 12:30 I went inside to dry the dishes from lunch and assist in the infant room.

The infant room, located in the middle of the daycare, is a no shoes, no peanuts, no pinenuts facility. While I was helping there, I learned about a new software called KidCare that is very similar to the PowerSchool  program we use at NMHS. On the iPads in the infant room, you are required to log every single thing that each baby does. All diaper changes, nap times, and feedings are recorded here, as well as any photographs we take of the babies. Also on this program, the parents can message you any questions they may have during the day, and you can respond to them right away.

A reaccuring thing that I noticed today was all of the procedures. There is a procedure for EVERYTHING, and it is crucially important that every procedure is followed. Today alone, I followed the procedure for washing and drying dishes, sanatizing changing tables, paperwork associated with minor cuts and bruises, drying the playground, vaccuming carpets and nap time. I think that I may have even skipped a few in that list. It can be a pain following all of the procedures that they have, but I know that they are there for a reason.

The most difficult part of today was learning all of the kids names. There are SO MANY CHILDREN it is very hard to keep straight who is who. You learn very quickly who the difficult kids are and their names are easy to remember, but I got the most flustered today when babies would come up to me crying because so-and-so pushed them and I didn't know who to repremand.

Overall, I had an amazing first day at my Senior Service. I am crazy tired right now, but I know that it will get easier and I will get less exhausted as the time goes by.

See you tomorrow!

Angie :)
